I was recently reading about language development in young children. I don't remember where I saw it, so no link, sorry, but the post/article/book was about how young kids feel very comfortable making up a word for something that they don't know or can't think of the correct word for. This is something that adults have a harder time with and often have the "tip of the tongue" scenario. They KNOW there is the exact word that they want, and they'll halt the conversation rather than just managing the sentence with a lesser word. The Germans, however, seem to have been cured of this inhibition. Anyhow, since reading this there have been a few interesting observations in our
Paper Maker. "Mom, can we colour on this, then put it into the papermaker and make it come out white again?" Several questions later (MAN, I'd be good at 20 questions now if I needed to play) I figure out he's talking about the printer. How logical.
Firepants. "Mom, What do those monsters, Firepants, that are all in black and wear capes and eat people eat?" No questions this time, just logic. Vampire.
Toiletries. Story that came from one of his teachers. Talking on phone to another teacher, "We're ok at the school for toiletries right now." McKay overhearing this; "Toilet trees? Toilet trees???? Is that like when we're hiking?"

I've been lurking here from long ago when you gave me this link. I'm Ben's Mom from the Clifton school! I've really enjoyed keeping up on your move to BC. I miss you guys and seeing spirited McKay at daily pickup.
Your post reminded me of when Ben saw Lexy hammer in a floor nail and upon seeing the hammer on the kitchen counter the next day said, "that's a mommy knocker"! It took me a while to figure out what object he was pointing at on the counter, but it made perfect sense once I figured it out!
i INSIST that you called me "Firepants" from now on.

So good to hear from you! Is your stint up north almost done? Everytime I read Alan/Max's blog I get amazed by how small our world really is! Our kids are so very fortunate to literally have the world at their fingertips to stay in touch with old friends!
